Project Manager Samirah Karim based in our London office, while on a visit to Pakistan, volunteered at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, Lahore.

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) was inaugurated in 1994. SKMCH&RC has become Pakistan’s first specialist cancer hospital, with all diagnostic and therapeutic facilities available under one roof, where treatment would be available for all, irrespective of their ability to pay. Today, SKMCH&RC is a 211-bed hospital, with 9 operating rooms, 5 radiation therapy machines, and 32 outpatient chemotherapy beds.

Samirah had a remarkable experience touring the hospital, meeting staff and interacting with the patients. The visit was notably significant as it occurred on World Cancer Day, an internationally recognised day for raising awareness about cancer.

Samirah found the volunteering day a rewarding experience that reminded her of the importance of gratitude, compassion, and teamwork.
