BREEAM Awards 2015

BREEAM Awards 2015

Monaghans are delighted to report that as some of 2014’s highest scoring buildings, two John Lewis stores delivered by our Project Managers have been shortlisted for the BREEAM Awards 2015.

BREEAM is the world's leading environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings and the annual BREEAM awards celebrate the best in sustainable construction, recognising the achievement of those involved in the specification, design, construction and management of BREEAM certified buildings in the UK and internationally.

The John Lewis Partnership has a well-established commitment to sustainability and Monaghans’ continued dedication to the delivery of increasingly sustainable developments was officially recognised as we were presented with the 2014 John Lewis Partnership Award for Responsible Development Innovation. The John Lewis Partnership is also no stranger to the BREEAM awards, with Waitrose stores having scooped the Retail category award three years in a row from 2011 to 2013. This year it is the turn of John Lewis stores as John Lewis Ashford and John Lewis York have both been nominated.

John Lewis Ashford has been nominated in the Retail (New Construction) category. The two storey, 40,000ft² shop in Kent was John Lewis’ tenth 'at home' store and received a BREEAM Excellent rating. The out of town location was complemented by the installation of significant bio diversity initiatives such as a rainwater harvesting system, bird and bat boxes, extensive landscaping, an attenuation pond and a rain garden within the roundabout.

The award winning John Lewis York (Retail Week Interiors Awards Department Store of the Year) has been nominated in the Retail (Refurbishment & Fit-Out) category. The two-storey, 128,000ft² building is the most sustainable John Lewis ever built and the first department store in the world to receive a maximum 5-star BREEAM Outstanding rating! The building utilises innovative environmentally friendly systems including sun pipes, an air displacement ventilation system, a 100% LED lighting scheme and an on-site solar array.

The shortlisted buildings will now be presented to an independent judging panel of eminent industry figures with the winners to be announced at the BREEAM Awards ceremony on Tuesday 3rd March at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square following the first day of Ecobuild.
